How to collect permitted public web data

Collect only information that is public and that you are allowed to access and use.

1. Define the public fields

List the public pages and exact fields that answer the research question. Do not collect unrelated personal or private data.

2. Select the locations

Choose the regions needed by the dataset. Use a broader location when state or city detail does not improve the result.

3. Control the request rate

Use a reasonable rate, follow the website terms, and stop when the website refuses access. Do not bypass a login or access control.

4. Keep the source record

Store the source URL, collection time, selected location, and field definition with each result so the dataset can be reviewed.

Public web data questions

Answers about scope, locations, sessions, and request limits.

What is public web data?

Public web data is information on a page that a visitor can access without a private account or access control.

Should I use rotating or sticky sessions?

Use rotation for separate samples. Use a sticky session when related pages must use the same IP.

Can I select several locations?

Yes. Generate a separate proxy username for each available location that the dataset needs.

What should I avoid?

Do not collect private data, bypass a login or access control, ignore a refusal, or use data without permission.
